Digital Citizenship/Character Development. In this class we will cover issues of technology that are important issues. Through the practice of Action Inquiry, the students brainstorm key themes they will address and support the community with educational awareness programs. This work has the students investigating and researching areas that relate to digital literacy and character development. The focus on research is key to the academic approach and rigors required in continuing education. For example students conduct survey development, focus group facilitation and interview method of gathering data. The focus on process and project management tools, note taking, managing excel for data collection, provide students with essential skills for High School and beyond.
The class is a High School elective and has a mix of students from grade 9 to 12. This mix of student is ideal and allows shared learning. In the first 5 weeks we will have discussed and explained methods of research and the approach that our class will take to support the LU community with the final project. The students are busy with assignments and completing self inquiry practices that engage them in personal character development, with a focus on personal values. They will have addressed and selected two or three top values based on Brene Brown's list form her book 'Dare to Lead'. In addition, Stephen Covey's book "7 Habits of Highly Successful People", supports the students understanding of bias, unconscious bias, paradigm shifts and transformational learning. With organizational skills at the core of Covey's work.
In addition, students will develop a vision board, goals and strategies and begin to be aware of their professional online presence through various social media platforms. The approach employed is a project based learning strategy approach. Students gather real data from the LU community and then develop tools and messages that educate and provide research results on LU digital usage and awareness. Project management skill development support the successful completion of Digital awareness programs that can be shared with our community. One example is the development of Instagram messages that are shared, providing educational impact in an engaging way.
By the end of this program students will:
- have developed the ability to conduct self-inquiry and understand self mastery
- develop programs that are age appropriate and educational in nature, through train-the-trainer lesson plans
- understand and work with project management techniques to achieve individual and team goals - excel and Gantt approaches
